Hopefully the Start of a Long & Beautiful List of Books for 4th and 5th graders

So I'm reading through the summer reading reviews from my class and I am making a sticky note list of books that I think students will love in 4th and 5th grade. I realize that my recommendations won't be nearly as compelling as the reviews my students have read.

So, I'm hoping my students can help me create a list of "top notch" books with honest recommendations from my amazing PALS 3 class.

  1. Tesla’s Attic
By Neal Shusterman and Eric Elfman
Tesla’s Attic is a book about Nick, a boy who, after his house in Tampa Bay burned down and killed his mom, was forced to move to Colorado. Nick, his dad, and his younger brother, Danny, move into Nick’s Great Grandma’s old house. Nick, seeing all the junk in the attic, decides to host a garage sale to raise some extra dough. Although it’s raining, people just seem to be drawn to Nick’s sale. Not only that, but they pay Nick more than twice as much as the broken objects are worth.. Nick eventually ties this to the light he had turned on in the garage, which just seemed to have a gravity of its own.
After talking to some of his customers, Nick was able to confirm that these objects all had special powers. Like:
An old-school battery that reanimates the dead
A recorder that plays back what you were thinking, instead of what you said
A toy-like object that, when you pull the string, will finish your sentence based on the past or the future.
These were some pretty powerful objects, and a certain group of people called the Accelerati are looking for them. Nick and his group figure this out, and are determined to get all the objects back before the Accelerati do. But the thing is, the Accelerati are willing to kill.

Petula had just met Nick and really liked him. She had bought a camera at the garage sale that showed her up to 24 hours in the future. She found out that someone at Nick’s house was going to die one night. She tried to warn him.. Turns out, one of Nick’s new friends, Vince, dies, because Nick was trying to turn off the TV, but the remote was planted by the Accelerati, and Vince dies instead.
And then the next week, it is determined the world is going to end. (But don’t worry Nick saved it.)

  3. Dog’s Purpose
I suggest the book a Dog's Purpose by W. Bruce Cameron. It is a book about a dog named Bailey who lives with his boy Ethan. But when Bailey dies, instead of going to heaven, he comes back to life as another dog, and he remembers Ethan and goes on an amazing adventure learning through each life, meeting many new people. Then, 7 lives after Bailey, as Buddy, he follows his nose and finds Ethan again. I'm not going to spoil the ending, but let me just tell you, it's sad. S.S.
